Lenana School is a national school located in Nairobi that enrolls the best-performing Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) students from all over the country. It was founded in 1949 by a colonial governor Philip Euen Mitchell, known then as the Duke of York School. Interestingly, the actual bell from HMS Duke of York is still mounted at the front of the school parade ground between the school chapel and the hall. The first students were briefly housed at the then British colonial Governor’s House, which is the current statehouse as they waited for the school’s completion.
The Lenana School was originally reserved for white students drawn from the sons of British settlers, most of whom were farmers in outlying areas. The school system was modeled after the English public-school system.
In 1969, the school got a new name – Lenana School. It was named after a legendary Laibon Lenana who was the central human figure in the Maasai religious system, and he ruled towards the end of the 19th century through to the early 20th century. The first Kenyan principal also changed the phrase that referred to the old students from OLD YORKIST to the phrase LAIBONS.
