Geraldo Rivera’s biography

The journalist was born on 4th July 1943 in Brooklyn, New York City, USA. His parents are Lillian Friedman Rivera (Russian Jewish mother) and Cruz Allen Rivera (Stateside Puerto Rican father). His father was a cab driver while his mother worked in a restaurant.

The attorney is the second born child in a family of five children. His siblings are Irene Rivera, Wilfredo Rivera, Craig Rivera, and Sharon Rivera. He was raised in different parts of New York City, such as Brooklyn and West Babylon.

He attended West Babylon High School after his elementary studies. Between 1961 and 1963, he enrolled at the State University of New York Maritime College, where he took part in rowing. He transferred to the University of Arizona, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration.

In 1966, he enrolled at Brooklyn Law School, where he earned his Juris Doctor degree. In the summer of 1969, he took a Reginald Heber Smith Fellowship in Poverty Law at the University Of Pennsylvania Law School.

Early career

The journalist started working immediately after attaining his first degree. He took a series of odd jobs ranging from clothing salesman to short-order cook. While in law school, he worked as an intern with the New York County District Attorney under the crime-fighter Frank Hogan and Harlem Assertion of Rights.

He worked at other organizations such as the lower Manhattan-based Community Action for Legal Services and the National Lawyers Guild. As a result, he became a frequent attorney for Young Lords, a Puerto Rican activist group. This marked the beginning of his career as a private practice attorney.

Journalism career

While working in private practice, he got the attention of WABC-TV News director AI Primo, who offered him a job as a reporter. The company arranged for him to undertake a course in introductory broadcast journalism.

He got his training under Fred Friendly in the Ford Foundation-funded Summer Program in Journalism for Members of Minority Groups. He studied at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.

In 1970, he started working as a reporter for Eyewitness News. He was recognized in 1972 after emerging as the winner of the Peabody Award. He was awarded for his report on the neglect and abuse of patients with intellectual disabilities at Staten Island’s Willow brook State School.

He started making appearances on ABC national programs such as Nightline and 20/20. In July 1973, he taped the pilot episode of Good Night America. On 21st April 1986, he hosted The Mystery of Al Capone’s Vaults. He was fired from ABC news on 15th May 2015.

After leaving ABC TV, the journalist became a producer and host for Geraldo’s daytime talk show. The show began in 1987 and ran for 11 years. It featured various controversial guests, which made it attain the label, Trash TV.

From 1994 to 2001, he hosted Rivera Live on CNBC. In 2009, he lent his voice to Phineas and Ferb during the Phineas and Ferb Busted episode. He played the role of newscaster Morty Williams.
